StarOffice 8 is Sun's professional, enterprise-strength office productivity suite for Linux, Windows, and the Solaris OS, and is based on the open source OpenOffice.org. A capable alternative to Microsoft Office, StarOffice augments the OpenOffice.org foundation with enterprise value-add components like a relational database, administration tools, and a commercial-quality spellchecker.

Additionally, StarOffice 8 software adds functionality to enable exports to PDF and to the Macromedia Flash format. It also introduces the new StarOffice Configuration Manager, the StarOffice Software Development Kit, a macro recorder, and support for assistive technologies, as well as for complex text layouts.
