Other than the Norwegian Web browser Opera, there hasn't been a viable competitor for the third spot in the browser wars for at least the last two years. Perhaps that's because Netscape and Internet Explorer now control more than 95% of the browser market, leaving little room for competition.

Couple the dominant market share of the two browsers with the fact that both are now available for free, and you get a good idea why the only real interest these days in terms of browser development is in niche products. NeoPlanet is one such browser alternative that fills a niche so well it may just be strong enough to surpass Opera for the bronze medal.
