Microsoft Revises Security Patch
Fix Arrives for MS06-042 Security Vulnerability
Ed Sutherland

Software giant Microsoft has released a fix to a problematic security patch introduced earlier this month. The update comes two days after the company announced a delay.

The updated MS06-042 security bulletin "fully resolves the security vulnerability discussed in Microsoft Security Advisory 923762," according to a statement.

After originally releasing a cumulative security patch Aug. 8 to fix eight flaws discovered in Internet Explorer, the following week Microsoft said it learned the vulnerability could be publicly exploited and was readying a cure.

Although the vulnerability could be exploited, Microsoft said it was not aware of any active attacks against its customers using the patch.

Last week, Microsoft suggested some users wait before applying the patch.

The original MS06-042 created problems for those using Internet Explorer 6 with Windows XP, Service Pack 1 or Windows 2000, Service Pack 4.

In either case, IE could crash while trying to access a Web page using the http 1.1 protocol.

The glitch affected only IE and Windows XP users with Service Pack 1. Microsoft plans to end support for SP1 in October.
