Microsoft to Fix Faulty Patch
Security Fix to Be Re-Released Next Week
Ed Sutherland

After complaints an earlier security patch interferes with some third-party software, Microsoft said it will re-release next week the fix, eliminating possibly dangerous changes to the Windows registry.

Microsoft said it completed an investigation into complaints its MS06-015 update, along with a new binary to police which applications are run from the Windows shell, caused Office and IE to stop working.

The software giant denies the problems are the fault of VERCLSID.EXE. A side effect of the new file was older applications, such as HP's Share-to-Web software and Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall, didn't recognize the file, causing problems.

"The revised security update will contain no changes to the binaries included in the initial security update," according to the updated MS06-015 security bulletin.

Microsoft said the revision will be automatically sent through Windows Update and Microsoft Update to users affected by the glitch.
