MSN Messenger 7.0 to Get New Video Features
MS and Logitech Partner on Enhanced Video Functionality
Sean Michael Kerner

The current release of MSN Messenger, version 6.0, includes video capabilities that Microsoft claims have been used by 30 million MSN Messenger users, out of approximately 155 million total users. The new video service is being jointly developed with webcam vendor Logitech as part of the two firms' ongoing relationship.

"As part of the extended relationship, MSN and Logitech will announce the continued technology collaboration which will enable MSN to provide a new, high-quality, seamlessly synchronized video and audio service to MSN Messenger 7.0 customers in the spring," Karin Muskopf, MSN product manager, told internetnews.com.

Though the feature is referred to as being "powered by Logitech," the new video capability will not be limited exclusively to Logitech webcams.

"Although Logitech is our preferred partner, this video feature will work with Web cameras that are compatible with instant messaging," Muskopf said.

Logitech hopes that the new extended video capability will help to expand webcam usage and make it even easier for users.

"The new capabilities we're delivering with MSN will remove barriers that in the past have prevented widespread consumer use of video and audio communications," said Junien Labrousse, senior vice president of the Video Business Unit at Logitech, in a statement. "With just a PC, a broadband connection, a headset, and a webcam, MSN Messenger subscribers will soon enjoy high-quality, fully synchronized video and audio over the Internet, using tools they're already familiar with."

Yesterday, Microsoft unveiled its enterprise collaboration roadmap at a press event in San Francisco. Microsoft's new corporate IM product, Microsoft Office Communicator, was showcased.
