Norton AntiSpam 2004
What Norton AntiSpam Could Do Better
Forrest Stroud

What Norton AntiSpam Could Do Better

Our one major complaint with Norton AntiSpam is the amount of time it takes to process changes in the status of messages from 'This is Spam' to 'This is Not Spam' (or vice versa). There's a lag of several seconds between initiating the change and having it take effect, a lag during which the user is prevented from doing anything else. Similarly, if you designate a batch of messages to spam status, you have to wait for each one to be processed before being able to completely focus on another task.

Nothing's more annoying than twiddling your thumbs waiting for your computer to finish a routine task, and unfortunately, the lag in Norton AntiSpam is quite the routine occurrence. Another annoyance with Norton AntiSpam is that the program occasionally fails to load with the mail client it ties into. When this happens, an abnormal shutdown of the mail client inevitably follows when the user attempts to process spam.

While these aren't critical annoyances, they’re the small details that set apart good software from great software. Overall, while we're pleased with its spam filtering capabilities and ease of use, we'll have to see Norton AntiSpam become more stable and more efficient in its processing of email before giving the client higher marks.

Pros: Powerful Bayesian filtering capabilities; full integration with Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora; integration with Norton Internet Security; easy to use

Cons: Not very efficient, with spam processing taking entirely too long; not completely stable (subject to the occasional crash), standalone edition is overpriced
