Version 4.0 is a major upgrade for MidPoint that brings a slew of new features and enhancements to the client, including an e-mail server and management tools that were previously only available as the E-mail Broker in the MidPoint Gold edition. Speaking of the Gold edition, version 4.0 is now offered in only one edition -- meaning that there are no longer separate Companion, Gateway, and Gold releases -- with flexible licenses for supporting anywhere from 2 to 250 users.
Here's a brief look at the new additions in v4.0:
· An Integrated E-mail Server and Management Tools. MidPoint's new e-mail server provides e-mail to your entire workgroup via a single mailbox at your ISP. Each user can set up a personalized e-mail address (with your domain name as the suffix) and have incoming mail routed directly to him or her through the mail server. The Server also offers a Spam Detection feature for automatically trashing unwanted e-mail.
· Managed Firewall. MidPoint 4.0's new managed firewall provides additional control and security over which applications can send information to and from the Internet.
· Network Adress Translation Support. NAT support provides additional transparency of connection, which basically means that virtually any type of application can now access the Internet through MidPoint.
· Completely Redesigned Interface. Version 4.0 offers an all-new interface with separate "views" of the various MidPoint functions (Activity and Mailbox views, for example). The new interface also provides enhanced control for the administrator, allowing him or her to define which protocols and applications can be allowed to connect through MidPoint on a user-by-user basis.
· Enhanced Guest Software. When run on a user's computer, MidPoint Guest will automatically find MidPoint on your LAN and configure the computer and its applications to work properly with the host MidPoint computer. New features in 4.0 include traybar icons for notifying users of incoming mail and for displaying the status of the computer's Internet connection.
· Mobile User Support. A new feature for mobile users in v4.0 is automatic e-mail forwarding, with support for sending your mail directly to Web-based services, cell phones, or pager services.
· Automatic E-mail Archival. MidPoint 4.0 provides an option for automatically archiving all e-mail for everyone in your office.
