Microsoft launched the Windows 98 Update Web site at the same time the new operating system was released as a way of assisting Windows 98 users with downloading interim product updates, OS service packs, bug fixes, and other Microsoft utilities.
Access to the service is free, but you will need Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 or later in order to take advantage of the service. Microsoft has also recently launched similar services for other operating systems in the Windows line, including Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, and Windows CE.
All of the Windows Update sites are essential for keeping up with the latest offerings from Microsoft. The only downside to the services is that product updates are restricted to Microsoft products (the Windows 98 Update site initially offered device drivers as well but recently ceased doing so). The rest of this review will cover products recently added to the Windows 98 Update site and will be revised each time a new update is released.
