In March of 2000 reports flooded the Internet claiming that the company Aureate (which has since changed its name to Radiate), the developers of an advertising software component in use by more than 295 applications would periodically transmit over the Internet personal information of any and all sorts from a user's machine, without their knowledge.
Most of these reports have since been refuted, although there is no question that some information is sent to Aureate without the person's knowledge. It's also been confirmed that in many cases, the Aureate software can lead to browser-related crashes and problems. For these reasons, Internet users have clamored for a software tool that identifies and removes the Aureate components. Enter OptOut.
