Netscape Instant Messenger is virtually indistinguishable from AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) v4.x client, which should really come as no surprise considering Netscape is now owned by AOL. As with AIM, the Netscape Instant Messenger makes it possible to exchange free, private messages with your online friends in real-time — unlike e-mail, instant messages appear as soon as they're sent.
The current edition of Netscape Instant Messenger (NIM) is identical to the v4.0 release of AOL Instant Messenger with the exception of a "Netscape Radio Now" button near the bottom of the NIM interface and several occurrences where "AOL" has been switched with "Netscape". This edition of NIM does lack the AIM Phone client currently featured in the 4.1 and later releases of AIM.
