New Additions in Windows 98 SE
As far as application updates go, Second Edition includes a number of updated Microsoft programs such as Internet Explorer 5, Outlook Express 5, NetMeeting 3, Windows Media Player 6.1, and DirectX 6.1. Like the bug fixes in the Service Pack, all of the updates included in the Second Edition have been available for download the past few months.
In addition to the new app updates, Second Edition also offers improved support for USB, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), Device Bay, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), and WebTV. Enhanced broadband access support is another hot topic in the Second Edition. Windows 98 SE offers native driver support for broadband modems, including cable, DSL, and ADSL modems.
More efficient use of high-bandwidth modems using network cards is another area where the Second Edition improves on the initial release of Windows 98. Driver support for PCI and USB modems as well as PPP over ATM ADSL support are additional improvements made in the area of broadband access.
