Microsoft Internet News Made Obsolete By Outlook Express

Since both the Internet Mail and Internet News clients only made it to a 1.0 release (with Outlook Express supplanting both in versions 4.x and later of Internet Explorer), it should not come as a big surprise that many features are missing relative to the competition.

Offline newsreading capabilities, address books, printing, kill list support, message thread monitoring, support for multiple mail accounts and multiple signatures, distribution list capabilities, advanced filter, and online help documentation are some of the features lacking in Internet Mail and News that you will find in Outlook Express.

In addition, both clients could benefit from speed improvements -- while they are native 32-bit applications, neither can compete in terms of speed with Outlook Express and competitors like Pegasus Mail, Eudora, and Agent. Unless you're tied to Internet Explorer 3.0 for some reason, we recommend upgrading to both Internet Explorer 5.0 and Outlook Express 5.0.
