Like most apps, HomeSite is not quite perfect. Most importantly, HomeSite could greatly benefit from features like FrontPage's WebBots, WebEdit's pre-coded collection of Java applets, and HotDog Pro's Supertoolz. And while HomeSite is easily the fastest advanced Web Development tool in terms of start-up time, page loading, and access to critical features, it still considerably lags behind a solid text/HTML editor like TextPad.
But overall, it's quite easy to overlook minor flaws like these when you consider the amazing array of advanced features and tools offered by HomeSite. And while the cost of the client has more than doubled since its original release (from $40 to $89), when you compare HomeSite's price, performance, and feature-set to those of the competition you'll find that HomeSite easily offers one of the best overall returns on your investment.
Note: The freeware version of HomeSite (v1.2) will continue to be available for downloading. However, this version is unsupported and lacks many of the features found in the commercial release, including multiple file editing, spell checking, right-click tag editing, and project management features.
Pros: Extensive feature-set, blazing performance, extremely easy to use, and (relatively) inexpensive -- what more could you ask for?
Cons: Lacks some of the competition's features like pre-coded Java applets & advanced DHTML design tools, development pace has slowed somewhat since sold to Allaire
