Deficiencies in Smart Bookmarks
SmartMarks suffers from faults in other areas as well. Most importantly, SmartMarks is quite slow, especially on older 486 and 386 computers with 8 MBs of RAM or less (6 MBs of RAM is an absolute minimum for running SmartMarks). This has unfortunately led more than a few users to abandon SmartMarks and its rich set of features. Also, it will be far easier for many users to manage their bookmarks from within Netscape rather than having to work with SmartMarks as well.
Another shortcoming is that Internet Explorer now has its own internal site monitoring capabilities, although SmartMarks remains better at handling a large number of sites. Finally, without an update in more than a year, First Floor appears to have lost some of its dedication to SmartMarks, especially with new releases of Netscape (4.5x) and IE (4.x and 5.x) released during that period of time. We suspect that with the recent acquisition of First Floor by Calico Commerce Smart Bookmarks will no longer be developed or supported, making it a tough recommendation given the many alternatives.
