MidiGate is a small application that plays MIDI files and is designed to function either as a standalone player or as an external helper client for playing files from within web browsers. Classical Archives has also released a companion piece of software called CD Gate which sports many of the same features as MidiGate but works with audio CDs instead of Midi files.
Features in the clients include seek and save capability, scan for text, General Midi/GS (Roland)/Patch reset keys (MidiGate only), and automatic termination. A native 32-bit release of MidiGate is now available that runs on Windows 95/98/XP and Windows NT/2000/2003. The new release adds support for long file names, an improved seek feature, a "stay on top" option, and additional new features.
Overall, these two clients are useful apps but are limited to only playing Midi and audio CD files. If your needs in these two areas tend to be high, you'll likely find that MidiGate and CD Gate are valuable clients, but if you're not a serious Midi/audio CD user, you'll probably prefer a client that plays a more extensive variety of audio files.
Pros: Plays your favorite Midi/audio CD files and functions great as a web browser helper app
Cons: Only plays Midi/audio CD files; most users will find more value in multi-format, newer audio players; severely dated interface and feature-set; no longer developed
