Master Windows NT Explorer
File Compression
Paul Jones

How do I compress and decompress files using Windows NT?

If you've set up NT to use the Windows 95-compatible FAT file system, you have no compression options. Old volumes compressed with any version of DriveSpace will be unavailable to NT. On NTFS volumes, you can compress individual files, folders, or entire drives by simply checking a box on the Objects properties sheet. When you compress a whole folder, any new files added to that folder are automatically compressed as well. Want to use Windows NT Explorer to see which files and folders are compressed? Open any folder window; choose View, Options; and on the View tab check the box labeled Display Compressed Files and Folders with Alternate Color.

There's no visible difference between the Windows 95 Explorer and its Windows NT 4.0 counterpart. Under the surface, though, there are differences between the file systems used by the operating systems: NT 4.0's security-conscious NTFS adds a Security tab to every file and folder's properties sheet; it also permits data compression on a case-by-case basis.
