Using Windows 95 Explorer Using Notepad Paul Jones
How can I move Notepad to the top of the list of applications I use to open a file?
When you double-click on a file with an unregistered extension (say, readme.1st) you get an Open With dialog box that lists dozens of programs you can use to open the file. This list is arranged alphabetically, a fact you can use to control the order of items on the list. Make a copy of C:WindowsNotepad.exe called C:Windows!Notepad.exe (note the underscore). Open an Explorer window; choose View, Options; select the File Types tab; then click on New Type. In the box labeled Associated Extension type dummy (or some other filename extension you never expect to use). Click on the New button under the blank Actions window. In the Action box, type Open. Then click on the Browse button and find C:Windows!Notepad.exe. Keep clicking on OK until you're back at the Explorer window. Now any time you double-click on a file with an undefined extension, the Open With dialog box will list _Notepad first.
