Dual Boot Between Windows 95 and Windows 3.x Adding Windows 3.x to the Configuration Michael Hayman
After performing the steps on the previous page, you may want to boot your old Windows. The following procedure will allow you to create a shortcut to Windows 3.x, and also permit you to boot to the older Operating System by pressing when "Starting Windows 95" appears during the boot process, and then typing WIN at the MS-DOS command prompt.
Boot to a command prompt.
Copy your old AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to AUTOEXEC.DOS and CONFIG.DOS.
Reboot, and go into your previous version of MS-DOS.
Type A:SETUP.EXE (or whatever) to start setting up Windows 3.x.
Tell setup that you would like to install Windows 3.x into a different directory. Do not agree to 'upgrade' your installation of Windows 95.
Select "Custom Setup"
If you want to save some space, deselect all the optional components when you are given a chance.
Let Setup modify AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS because these will be the versions from your old MS-DOS.
Boot into Windows 95.
Drag a shortcut to WIN.COM from your old Windows directory and place it onto the desktop.
Right-click on it, select properties.
Go to the Program Tab, and select "Close on Exit."
Click Advanced.
Select MS-DOS mode, and uncheck "Warn before entering MS-DOS mode".
Click OK, Click OK.
Rename and change the icon appropriately.
Now, when you click on the Windows 3.x icon, you'll be thrown out of Windows 95, and into Windows 3.x. When you exit, Windows 95 will restart.
