Endless Defrag Searching for a Solution D. E. Levine
I decided to run Defrag during the day after making certain that all of the programs were closed. So I restarted the Defrag tool and went off to work on a different system.
I was delayed getting back to check on the machine. So sure was I that I'd see some significant results in the optimization process, that it never occurred to me that failure was an option. However, even with all my programs closed, Disk Defragmenter was seemingly stuck in exactly the same place as it had been previously.
This was really getting to be irritating and time consuming too. I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL to get a list of running programs. There didn't appear to be any except Norton AntiVirus but that program hadn't interfered with Defrag on any of my other computers. I reasoned that since I was running an older operating system, the antivirus product was probably the culprit.
Obviously that was my problem. I felt good about finally finding the problem and knowing that I had a solution. I went into the Norton AntiVirus product and turned it off so it wouldn't continue to scan the disks. It would turn on automatically when I rebooted the machine. Meanwhile, the antivirus product wouldn't interfere with the Defrag tool.
I set up Defrag to run during the night and went to bed. While I had sweet dreams my computer was chugging away and being optimized - or so I thought.
The next morning, I was in exactly the same situation that I'd been in the previous day. Defrag was still stuck on the beginning of Drive C.
I have to admit I was a bit irritated because using Disk Defragmenter was supposed to be a simple, non-intervention task, not a lifetime experience. I just wanted to optimize my drives and get a little more use out of my machine, not grow old doing it.
