Windows Me Doesn't Work for Me
Using McAfee to Restore System Restore
D. E. Levine

System Restore Doesn't Work

Several months ago it was discovered that McAfee's QuickClean contains a bug that causes System Restore in Windows Me to stop working. The Systems Restore utility stores one to three weeks of changes made to the operating system. When you accidentally delete or corrupt a program file, settings or drive partitions, the System Restore can resurrect them. The utility also tracks software installations.

QuickClean is sold as a standalone product, as part of McAfee's Uninstaller, and as part of McAfee Office. By running the Registry Cleaner component of McAfee QuickClean you can eliminate defunct entries from your system. However, unfortunately QuickClean also removes a Registry key that defines .HTC file associations, and System Restore in Windows ME saves its data as .HTC files. Software testers at KeyLabs found that the files themselves aren't deleted, but by deleting the Registry key also deletes the links to the files.

There are currently two fixes that WinPlanet found that will get System Restore up and running after QuickClean has incapcitated it.

Fix for Missing System Restore Function from McAfee

Step 1. Make a backup of the Registry before attempting to make any changes.

Step 2. Click the Start menu in the lower left corner of the desktop.

Step 3. Click on Run.

Step 4. In the Run dialogue box type regedit and then click OK.

Step 5. Click on the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.

Step 6. Click on the + next to SOFTWARE folder.

Step 7. Click on the + next to CLASSES folder.

Step 8. Scroll down the list and find a foldner named .htc

Step 9. Now that you've verified that the folder does not exist, exit out of the registry by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the window.

Step 10. Go to www.mcafeehelp.com and select Uninstaller 6.0 under products.

Step 11. Click download patch file to start the download of the htc.reg patch file.

Step 12. A window name Save As opens and a window called File Download will pop up.

Step 13. You will have two options:

Open this file from its current location

Save this file to disk

Step 14. Choose the option Save this file to disk.

Step 15. Select Desktop for the Save in field.

Step 16. Click on the Save button to save the attachment to your computer. If you get a window after the file has finished downloading, select the Close option.

Step 17. After the file is finished saving, navigate to your Desktop.

Step 18. Your Desktop should now have a new file on it named htc.reg.

Step 19. Double click the htc.reg file on the Desktop to register the new key in the Windows Registry.

Step 20. Repeat Steps 1-8 above to make sure that the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECLASSES.htc key is now in your registry.

Step 21. If the key is there then exit out of the registry.

Step 22. Now that Windows Me System Restoration function has been restored, restart your computer.
