CuteFTP 3.0
Features
Ben Durbin

The basic features of CuteFTP include functons to download/upload files, delete, rename, move, execute, create new directories, and so forth. But where it outshines other file transfer clients is in its Explorer Integration. With this, you can drag and drop files from the Internet to your hard drive, and vice-versa.

Here is a run down of all the features included with CuteFTP:

  • CuteMP3 and File Finder
Search using various search engines for MP3s and files. Since MP3s are very popular today, a good FTP site search tool can be very handy. But does it really work? We put it to the test. First we entered Third Eye Blind, a popular alternative band that should be available on a lot of sites by now. I limited the returns to 100 just to see if it would find that many listings. In less than 30 seconds it had already found 100 listings. Then just for a totally opposite turn around, I had it search for Steven Curtis Chapman, a famous contemporary Christian singer. It took longer but ended up finding 10 of his MP3s.
  • CuteFTP Persistent File Transfer
Auto-reconnects and resumes a transfer until the file requested has been uploaded or downloaded. This is a very useful feature if you have a dial-up connection or have to reboot a lot.
  • Auto Reconnect (RAS)
Automatically dials your ISP as soon as an attempt is made to connect to a site. Also automatically tries to reconnect after broken transfers.
  • Site Wizard
Step-by-step utility designed to help users connect to their FTP site, a new feature in version 3.0 that makes connecting to an FTP site very easy.
  • Shell Integration
Allows right-click action on your PC to automatically send files to selected sites. Just right click on the file and select an FTP to upload to.
  • Connection/Transfer Error Prompts
CuteFTP uses prompts to help identify problems during the connection/transfer process. The prompts may be turned off.
  • Queue Enhancements
The queue is no longer site dependent. You can also edit, save, and load the queue.
  • Explorer Integration
Drag and Drop files within CuteFTP panes and from Windows. The only operation not currently supported is remote to Explorer transfer and remote to remote file copy (only move is supported). With Explorer integration, even the newest users of CuteFTP can figure out how to download/upload files if they have any experience with Microsoft Windows.
  • Additional Firewall Support
New firewall types have been added for firewall support.
  • Remote File Editing
Make changes to your HTML documents using the sophisticated built-in HTML/text editor, CuteHTML. How many FTP clients that you download have their own HTML utility built right in? If you are a web designer or want to become one, remote file editing is a feature that you will appreciate.
  • Delete to Recycle Bin
Users may delete files from the local pane in CuteFTP to the Recycle Bin rather than permanently deleting a file or files. If you are click happy, or are human and make mistakes, this feature could be a lifesaver.
