Unlike other programs that only Ping the host to maintain a connection, Stay Connected! has the option of using up to 5 different protocols (HTTP, Echo, Discard, FTP, SMTP, and TimeServer). It even has a user-defined port for users behind a firewall or gateway. For example, when there is no activity from a user interacting with an AOL browser, AOL actually pops up a message informing the user that the connection has been idle for a while, and will be disconnected automatically without a click on "OK" or "Yes".
After disconnection, attempts to dial-up AOL become extremely difficult, especially during peak hours. Stay Connected! ensures that you'll never be disconnected again. It runs in the system tray (tray notification area) and is fully automated, so there is no need to rely on one host to maintain a connection anymore.
