Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.1
Features for Everybody
Douglas Smith

Some of the key features include:

  1. Plays most local and streamed multimedia content
  2. Support for ASF, Real Video/Real Audio 4.0, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, WAV, AVI, MIDI, MOV, VOD, AU, MP3, and QuickTime files-all with the Windows Media Player, making it convenient to access most multimedia data types.
  3. Fully resizable player, you can select video image sizes of 50%, 100%, 200%, and full screen, or resize the video to any size you want, depending on your preference and image quality.
  4. Favorites menu has pointers to cool content allowing you to quickly link to preloaded content site links, or save pointers to your favorite clips.
  5. Windows Media Player delivers the widest range of content, from 2.4 KBPS streams of speech-quality audio to full-screen, full-motion video at 8 MBPS. No matter what your Internet connection, you can play the content that's right for you.
  6. When you access an audio or video clip, Windows Media Player checks to see if the required codec is installed. If not, it will automatically download the codec for you, and then play the file.
  7. Content streams (which can be from different servers or composed of different media types) can be played without pausing in between clips.
  8. The stream to the Windows Media Player automatically adjusts in several ways:
  9. Selects between one of two video streams depending on bandwidth.
  10. Requests only key frames when the lower bit-rate stream cannot continue.
  11. Tells the server not to send any video at all but keeps audio running. (Because audio is critical to the user experience, it has top priority.)
  12. As network bandwidth and conditions improve, the video steps back up to optimize the viewing experience.
