Wrox Press VB6 Win32 API Tutorial The Beginning Karl Moore
During my initial search to find out more about the API, I looked on the Internet. And yes, I found documentation on almost every Win32 API call under the sun. A quick scour through our local tech-bookstore also rendered the same response.
That's great if you're looking for a reference book--but step-by-step instructions and real-life examples are often hard to find. Not anymore. Not with Jason Bock's excellent tutorial, pitched at the intermediate Visual Basic user.
To quote the author, this book starts at "the beginning". And to steal another quote (this time it's The Sound of Music), "a very good place to start".
It starts off with a simple explanation of the API and surrounding myths, explaining any complicated concepts with simplified analogies and easy-to-understand graphics. His writing style isn't overly-complicated either, allowing readers to actually understand what the author is talking about. That's always an advantage!
The author also warns programmers of commonplace pitfalls: what to watch out for. For instance, did you know the API Viewer can't be trusted? Oh no. And Jason reveals why.
This 400-page release also contains dozens of practical key API calls, such as playing wave files, rotating text, adding form gradients and tiling images.
Certainly not a dull reference book, this excellent tutorial encourages readers to explore other API features--an often skipped step in similar books. References to various other API books are also made throughout this publication, allowing the further investigation of any particular area.
