Essentially, the pack allows you to control devices from your PC - switch them on and off at the click of a button, no extra wires required. "Big deal!" you may shout - but don't. Think of its amazing potential when backed by powerful front-end software...
You arrive home from work at 6pm, tired after a difficult day. Wouldn't it be nice to enter your kitchen with the lights dimmed, kettle boiling and your favourite jazz band playing? Yeah. Or perhaps you're on holiday for a week and want the lights to turn on and off between dusk and dawn? No problem.
Allow me to explain how it works. After installing the Home Control software, you attach the "Interface" (basically a plug) to your PC. It's this plug that controls your home, even when the PC is switched off. Then you design a "master plan" using the bundled software - what to switch on/off and when.
For instance, you can ask it to turn on your hi-fi at 4pm. You then attach an "Appliance Module" (basically another plug) to the plug of the hi-fi. In plain English, the hi-fi plugs into the back of appliance module and the appliance module fits into a standard plug socket. No probs there.
Then, when 4pm rolls around - the Interface sends a low-level message throughout the entire household electrical system, scanning for the hi-fi. When found, it starts playing! Simple as that.
How does it know which is the hi-fi? When setting up on your PC, you give each module a name - A1, for instance. Then, on the appliance module, you specify which name you chose. And it really is that simple.
The kit also includes a lamp module, which (surprisingly) controls lighting devices. But it goes one step further than the everyday appliance module... this one will even allow you to fade lights in/out without using a dimmer switch.
