Rit Research Labs The Bat
The Bat! Is Really Unique
Douglas Smith

Immediately you will notice that The Bat! has a non-standard menu structure, this gave us a problem until we got used to it. The Bat! is loaded with plenty of little extras. When you reply to a message, the original text message appears in a separate, scrollable window so you can refer to it. In addition, you can create templates that use variables for automatically inserting items from a pop-up menu. For instance, you can create a template that personalizes your response by placing the recipient's name in the salutation. Other conveniences include a drop-down list with the names of your most recent message recipients and the ability to paste the contents of the Clipboard into a message as a quotation. The Bat! also has on-the-fly spell checking. The Bat! is great at managing multiple POP e-mail accounts. As in Microsoft Outlook Express, each account appears as a top-level folder with basic subfolders, such as an in-box and out-box, beneath it. You can create your own folders and subfolders for each account and set a wide range of parameters, such as how often the program checks for new mail and which audio alerts should be played when new mail arrives. The Bat! has great filters that can watch for just about any condition in the message. It can also perform a variety of responses, including filing the message in a specific folder, responding with a form message, and adding the sender's address to your address book. Other message management features include the ability to park messages, which prevents you from deleting them or moving them to another folder until you unpark them. You can also set a folder to delete messages after a specified number of days. Some new features in this version also include a ticker that will announce new messages as they arrive, letting you know with a configurable stream of text that includes the header of each message. In addition, a mail dispatcher will allow you to go out to the server and view messages prior to downloading them to your machine. The Bat! is very configurable, and has pop-ups activated by right-clicking the mouse button.
