Symantec Norton AntiVirus 4.0
Protect Your Computer!
Stefan Assmann

Symantec has released Norton AntiVirus 4.0, the newest version of its award winning antivirus solution.

Installation

Upon insertion of the CD into the drive, you're greeted by an attractive menu, enabling you to choose between installing the program, watching videos, installing the demo versions or reading the manuals.

Installing is a very straight-forward process: choose your options, wait during installation and reboot your machine.

New Features

Norton AntiVirus 4.0 consists of four components:

  • NAV AutoProtect, running in the background, notifies you as soon as it finds suspicious activity.
  • Norton AntiVirus itself checks for and repairs or deletes viruses.
  • LiveUpdate automatically updates and installs new virus signatures.
  • Norton Scheduler allows you to schedule virus scans and LiveUpdate sessions.

NAV 4.0's interface is the same as in version 2.0. The main novelty is under the surface: the core engine now contains 'Bloodhound' technology, a form of heuristic scanning to increase the effectiveness of the program against unknown viruses. The sensitivity level at which the engine scans can be specified.

Effectiveness

When we tested Norton AntiVirus 4.0 with a selection of both very popular and rarer viruses, NAV successfully detected them all.

Conclusion

Users of previous versions of NAV should upgrade as soon as possible to version 4.0. Other antivirus solution users need to at least download the trial version of Norton AntiVirus 4.0 and see what it's all about.
