Onax Desk Pad 98 1.5
Desk Pad
Jim Fox

Windows 95 introduced the term "desktop" to the computing world and the way we work with our computers hasn't been the same since. We can now get our work done faster and easier, but there is always room for improvement. By the time you get your computer loaded full of programs and games, it sometimes becomes a bit of a hassle negotiating the Start Menu to launch that program you are looking for.

Introducing Desk Pad 98. Desk Pad 98 creates a small window which can be placed anywhere on your desktop, allowing quick, easy access to all your favorite programs. You can even change the background of the Desk Pad as you do with your Windows desktop, allowing you to add your own personal touch to your Desk Pad.

With Desk Pad 98 you can create quick links for up to ten of your favorite programs, giving you access to them from a right-click activated cascading menu. By default the menu is configured with direct links to Notepad, Calculator, Explorer, Defrag, Scan Disk, Word Pad, Sound Recorder, Telnet, IP Configuration and Registry Editor. Any one of these can easily be changed to launch the program of your choice. Desk Pad 98 also has six small icons on its interface providing one click access to My Programs, Dial Up Network, Control Panel, Explorer, Calculator and Notepad.

Included with Desk Pad 98 is "Scratch Pad" for creating short, quick notes, and a Desk Pad for creating and saving larger notes. Another useful feature is a built in Internet Search function. Selecting Net Search brings up a dialog box with links to six of the major Internet search engines - Yahoo, Alta Vista, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek and Webcrawler.

One of the most useful features of Desk Pad 98 is the email checker. It can be configured to check your mail on a regular basis or only when you choose to. When you have new mail, the display becomes animated, and you can view the subject and sender of each new message. Then you can decide whether to fire up that email client or just retrieve the junk mail later.

If you are looking for a desktop enhancement to make your everyday Windows experience a little bit easier, check out Desk Pad 98. It's a nice little utility for the Windows 95/NT environment.
