InstallShield AdminStudio 2.0 Pre-Deployment D. E. Levine
Windows Installer
Traditional and Windows Installer achieve the same goal through different means. Traditional setups rely upon a custom-built engine. With Windows Installer, Microsoft created an industry standard for installation and uninstallation. Windows 2000 requires all installations to use Windows Installer. The standardization for installation is expected to create greater stability, better maintenance, and improved management of the all applications installed on the system.
The pre-deployment process can consist of up to four steps in which you prepare a Windows Installer installation for distribution . These can include:
1. Repackaging traditional setups.
2. Authoring or modifying Windows Installer-based setups.
3. Resolving Conflicts between Windows Installer setups.
