We started out by simply pointing Metabot at a group of HTML files on one of our servers. The software immediately scanned our files and created a project file with a list of all pages and metatags in spreadsheet format. Each column gave specific data about our metatags, such as MIME type, text or audio, etc. The software even let us provide copyright notices for each page.
Support for metatag types is good--over 50, including HTTP-EQUIV, and NAME attributed tags. Context-sensitive help for each column helps sort them all out. Adding metatag information to large projects is just as easy--just a cut and paste operation on the specific column, allowing for bulk updates to many pages at once. Some new features in version 3.0:
Intuitive Wizard Interface
Web-based Recommendations Reports
Enhanced HTML Editor Integration
Keyword Search Criteria
Character Count
Spell Checker
If your small business or organization is looking for total control over metatags and site optimization for search engines, this is a great application to add to your tools for managing the web. The cost is rather steep, but nevertheless the product is worthwhile for administering large sites. Metabot 3.0 works with Windows 95/98/NT and requires 16 MEGs of memory and a 32 bit internet connection.
