Street Atlas USA 7.0
Meet an Old Friend
Jim Fox

Ever since its introduction in 1991, Street Atlas USA from Delorme, has been the industry leader in Mapping Software. With version 7.0 of Street Atlas USA, Delorme has once again "raised the bar" on its competitors. Delorme has always gone that extra mile keeping its mapping database updated and it shows in this new version. Street Atlas USA now also includes over three million points of interest including restaurants and lodgings.

Whether you are trying to find the location of that hotel you are staying in next week or just find the location of a new store across town, Street Atlas USA is the one. I wanted to find the location of that new Muffler Shop in town. I had the street address, but the street is over 10 miles long and I had no idea how the street numbers run. No problem for Street Atlas USA. I typed in the street address and it immediately showed me exactly where it was.

The entire USA is mapped on one CD and the search engine is incredibly fast. Search by Placename, Address, Street Intersection, Zip Code, Telephone Area Code or Latitude/Longitude. View the entire USA and then zoom in by windowing an area with the mouse. As you zoom in, the level of detail automatically changes and updates. Pan the map by clicking the left mouse button, and the map automatically centers on the point clicked. Right mouse button clicks produce another host of menu options.

Street Atlas 7.0 now includes Address-to-Address routing. Enter start and finish points on the routing toolbar or mouse and right-click directly on the map to add start, stop and finish points. It then calculates the route on the map and generates a list of verbal directions from start to finish. To override roads it recommends, simply right click on the map to add a Via (by way of) on the roads you want to drive. Vias act like Stops, but don't appear in your route directions. You can even rearrange the order of the Vias and Stops in the "Manage Vias and Stops" dialog box.
