Greek Amazon Look-alike Changes Name Greek Amazon Look-alike Changes Name Paul Jones
Just two weeks after Amazon.com filed a lawsuit against Amazon Greece, the Greece-based online bookstore has changed its name to Greekbooksonline.com. However, it still owns the domain names Amazon.com.gr and Amazon.gr.
Greg Lloyd Smith's CITI Services Limited owns and operates Greekbooksonline.com. He said that the name change was based on the overuse of the word "Amazon", rather than the legal dispute, which Smith intends to continue. He said, "We intend to pursue it right to the last second. We haven't caved. We're playing a little game of chess here."
Ironically, Amazon is involved in another copyright and trademark dispute in Minnesota. A Minneapolis-based Amazon Bookstore sued Amazon in April. It contends that Amazon.com was aware that it was misappropriating the name when it launched its online bookstore in 1995.
