SystemSuite 5 Offers Virus, Firewall, Spam Protection, and System Recovery Fix-It Utilities Also Upgraded Eric Grevstad
Mon 6/23/03 -- Symantec's Norton Utilities toolkit is no longer available as a standalone product, but V Communications' upgraded Fix-It Utilities 5 will be available for $50 next month. Still, there's something to be said for Symantec's bundled-antivirus-and-firewall approach -- and for the better bargain of getting Fix-It Utilities 5 as part of V Communications' deluxe SystemSuite 5 package for $60.
Both products are seeing their first upgrade since V Communications acquired them from KrollOntrack last fall. Fix-It Utilities 5 raises the bar for PC maintenance and repair with improved hardware diagnostics, including DVD, USB, and FireWire support; registry repair; and Virus Scanner Pro virus protection. An all-new Recovery Commander module can correct major system file damage that prevents a PC from booting, with more flexibility than Symantec's (formerly Roxio's) GoBack.
The SystemSuite 5 bundle adds an advanced personal firewall; a SecurErase tool for wiping out hard disks or parttions for recycling purposes; and new anti-spam e-mail monitors and anonymous-surfing privacy modules to reduce online annoyance. Both packages also include the PowerDesk file manager.
