ScanSoft's PaperPort Pro 9 Helps Office Paper Shufflers Combine Scanning and Document Management with PDF Creation Eric Grevstad
Mon 3/10/03 -- According to ScanSoft Inc., its PaperPort Deluxe is the world's most popular document management program. The company's new PaperPort Pro 9 Office gives organizations of all sizes even more weapons against messy piles of paper -- it combines document management with network scanning and Adobe Acrobat PDF file creation to organize paper and digital documents alike.
The $200 package (volume and site-license discounts available) can create PDF files from any Windows application, whether existing Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files or graphic images; capturing Web pages as PDFs for offline viewing or archiving; or assembling pages from different types of files into a single, custom PDF as easily as you'd stack different sheets of paper in a folder.
Its OCR component eliminates retyping by extracting text from scanned documents and PDF files, while additional capabilities let users annotate or send Acrobat files as e-mail attachments, automatically converting mixed document sets as required, or turn static PDFs into fillable electronic forms with an instant FormTyper feature.
A visual thumbnail desktop displays nearly every file type and image format without having to open documents. Documents on local PCs and the office network are automatically indexed for quick searching; sending documents from a network scanner to the PaperPort desktop -- eliminating conventional copying -- is automatic, while sending documents to e-mail, fax, printer, or FTP transfer is as simple as clicking a toolbar. Connections to e-mail clients and enterprise back-end systems like Oracle 9i and Microsoft SharePoint promote paperless document flow.
