New Version of WebWasher Filters Ads, Protects Privacy Not Only Free, But Configuration-Free Eric Grevstad
Mon 12/16/02 -- While it's been busy with enterprise editions and corporate gateways lately, the online filtering and security company webwasher.com AG hasn't forgotten its popular, free-for-home-and-educational-use WebWasher Classic. A new version of the Internet ad- and cookie-blocker and privacy-protection utility is now available for download.
WebWasher Classic 3.3 can eliminate pop-up windows, animated graphics, and banner ads (or any graphics of any specified pixel size), while stopping cookies and "Web bugs" from transmitting information about you to third parties or advertisers. Parents can also use it to block access to, or permit access to only, a list of specified sites.
The new version's "configuration-free" option makes installation easy, even with browsers that don't allow the configuration of a proxy server, so WebWasher is compatible with Windows XP -- it runs as either a client or local-network proxy server on Windows 95/98/Me/NT 4/2000/XP -- and AOL's Internet access software.
