Executive Software Offers Free Upgrade for Diskeeper 7.0 Second Edition Supports Three Defragmentation Modes Eric Grevstad
Mon 11/18/02 -- When you've got a 98-percent market share among corporate hard-disk-defragmenter utilities, what do you do for an encore? Executive Software International says it's hard at work on Diskeeper 8.0 for next year, but has decided not to wait for give its customers extra speed and extra options -- so Diskeeper 7.0 Second Edition is now available as a free upgrade for users of version 7.0.
Like its predecessor, Diskeeper 7.0 Second Edition offers "set it and forget it" and "smart scheduling" options to automate routine network defragmentation and keep PCs running at peak efficiency, as well as a "push install" routine that makes site-wide deployment painless for system administrators. While new algorithms make it faster, Executive says, the real bonus is new flexibility in defrag options -- specifically, three modes that give a choice of hard-disk configurations.
The "Quick Defragmentation" mode achieves the fastest defragmentation while using the fewest system resources possible; it's recommended for use when a swift cleanup is all that's needed to improve efficiency when accessing recently created files. An "Improved Free Space" mode uses additional disk processing to greatly improve free space consolidation on NTFS disks.
Finally, the recommended optimum or "Maximum Disk Performance" setting delivers the highest return on disk performance, balancing defragmentation and free space consolidation against system resource activity and demand. If you're not already a Diskeeper customer, the new release costs $50 for the Workstation and $250 for the Server version.
