Partition Magic 8.0 Boosts Hard Disk and OS Management Win XP-Style Interface Includes File and Folder Moving and Copying Eric Grevstad
Mon 9/23/02 -- Whether you'd like to install and choose at startup between old and new versions of Windows, between Windows and Linux, or just need more efficient file management and ways to protect important data, PowerQuest Corp.'s PartitionMagic 8.0 offers convenient ways for novice and expert users alike to optimize PC performance and run multiple operating systems.
Version 8.0's new interface combines the Windows XP look and feel with a file browser that lets you move or copy folders and files between multiple partitions, such as from a Windows NTFS to a Linux ext3 partition, or stash digital photos or valuable files in their own partitions so they won't be lost in the event of a system crash and OS reinstallation.
New wizards and a Flash tour give both simple instructions and detailed guidelines for creating and manipulating partitions without reformatting your hard drive, while included DataKeeper software provides automated, incremental backup of files to a separate partition or removable media.
The program supports partition sizes up to 160GB in all three Windows (FAT, FAT32, and NTFS) and two Linux (ext2 and ext3) file systems, and can change FAT32 and NTFS cluster sizes to improve performance. A BootMagic utility lets you safely switch between operating systems, while PQBoot lets Windows users specify the OS they wish to use on the next reboot.
PartitionMagic 8.0 will ship at the end of September for $70, with an upgrade for registered users available for $50.
