Dantz Retrospect 6.0 Brings Enterprise Backup To Small Biz
Built-In Intelligence Automates Server, Desktop, and Notebook Backup
Eric Grevstad

Mon 7/1/02 -- Dantz Development Corp. has released a major upgrade to its popular Retrospect line of Windows backup software. The $149 Retrospect 6.0 Professional brings individual and small-office users data-security features formerly available only to big enterprise IT departments.

Retrospect's automated backup process eliminates the need to fuss with sequences of full, incremental, and differential backups or multiple backup tapes. The program delivers 100-percent accurate restores without performing constant full backups; restores data without returning unwanted deleted, renamed, or moved files to your PC's hard disk; recognizes supported backup devices with no need to load and configure drivers; and can optionally compress or encrypt files before backup. Notebooks are backed up automatically whenever they connect to the company network.

While other disaster-recovery solutions require that recovery CDs be created while everything is working (i.e., before they're needed), Dantz' Disaster Recovery Wizard creates a bootable CD image from the backup even after the computer to be restored has died. The program can restore from any backup, unlike products that require consistent maintenance of separate backup and disaster-recovery sets.

The $149 Professional edition runs on a single PC and can back up two additional desktop or notebook systems on a single network (additional licenses are available at extra cost). For $799, Retrospect Single Server backs up one server and unlimited networked PCs.
