The FBI met Friday morning with representatives of a security company that said it had discovered a widespread, malicious Internet program embedded on home computers. Hours later, the bureau had yet to issue a security alert, a move that would indicate the presence of a serious threat.
The security company said it discovered that a program planted on some 2,000 commercial and home computers that could allow hackers to control the machines and possibly to launch denial-of-service attacks similar to those that crippled high-profile Web sites in February, including CNN.com, Yahoo! and eBay. The FBI was still in the process of assessing the threat, government sources said.
